Both Melissa Siegrist-Jacobs' parents and grandparents owned antique shops, and as a child Melissa learned to sew in 4-H. After completing a two year course in upholstery, Melissa operated her own business in California for fifteen years. In 1996, she founded A Velvet Hammer Inc. in Chagrin Falls where she combines the best of traditional Ohio craftsmanship with many of the fabrics, custom designs, and specialty accessories reminiscent of California and the Pacific Rim. We met with Melissa recently, and listened as she outlined the products and services offered by A Velvet Hammer Inc.

A Velvet Hammer Inc. offers custom furniture upholstery, window treatments, cushions and pillows, and designer fabrics. We remove the old fabric from furniture, re-spring or re-web if necessary, install new Dacron or cotton batting, add new foam or down, perform minor re-gluing of the frame, and recover the piece to provide a new, exciting look to match our clients' existing decor. In addition, we offer bed skirts and duvet covers, decorative pillows, neck rolls, window seat cushions, cushions for porch furniture, and custom window treatments that include stationary panels and all types of valances and toppers. All of our products and custom made to our customers' specifications.

I design and build a line of children's rocking chairs that are sturdy and built to last a lifetime. Featuring complimentary fabrics and skirt types, these comfortable rockers are exceptional pieces of furniture destined to become heirlooms as they are handed down from one generation to another. Each of our rockers is hand-made by our own craftsmen to exacting standards of durability and comfort. I also offer a line of custom, eighteen inch tall upholstered vanity stools complete with internal storage compartments.

I am a member of the Window Coverings of American Association (WCAA) and frequently attend workshops and conferences to stay up-to-date on new products, trends, and design ideas. I also teach an adult education upholstery class at Orange Community Education & Recreation in Pepper Pike.
